Chiefs LB Nick Bolton discussed coverage plan for Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs

The NFL has a variety of speedy players that are so dynamic that it can change a defense’s game plan to slow him down. The Kansas City Chiefs are well aware that defensively, they will need to prepare for a player they’ve never seen before but has the abilities and hype to be a game-changer.

Jahmyr Gibbs is the Detroit Lions electric rookie running back, with plenty of people talking about his potential in the league. The former Alabama standout ran an official 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. During Sunday’s press conference, Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton shared his thoughts on the Lions rookie and strategy heading into Thursday.

“Yeah, man, you’ve got to go off a little bit of tape you got from college, a little bit of preseason, but when you watch the tape, it obviously can tell you the dynamic speed is definitely his friend,” Bolton explained. “(He) was able to get the ball, get up the field, make one cut, and it could be a house call, so we understand the challenge up ahead of us again, I guess I don’t have much tape out there so I really don’t know he’s going to be used or how they plan on using him early so it’s getting a lot of touches early to get him involved and just see what he can do with the football.”

Bolton was amongst the league leaders in tackles in 2022 and has emerged as a leader on the Chiefs’ defense. The goal will be to ensure Gibbs doesn’t have a breakout first game of his NFL career.
