Chiefs' Andy Reid says he has not spoken with Tyreek Hill
PHOENIX — While police continue to investigate an incident involving alleged battery of a juvenile at the home of Kansas City’s Tyreek Hill, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Tuesday that he hasn’t spoken with the star 25-year-old wideout.
“I have not — our counsel has told us not to do that, so I have not been in contact with him. ” Reid told reporters at the NFL owners meetings. “I really don’t even have a further statement from what we put out. So really, nothing’s happened there. There’s no news on that.”
Reid confirmed that the Chiefs had an initial talk about their responses for the different outcomes involving the investigation, but declined to go into details.
“You always want to make sure everybody’s OK, and then let it run its course and make sure you let that part happen ... that’s where we’re at right now,” Reid said. “As a coach or human, I mean, you’re gonna have things that happen. So you deal with it.”
The Chiefs released a statement on March 15 acknowledging the investigation around Hill, adding that the club was in the process of gathering information and was in contact with the NFL and local authorities.
Reid didn’t provide much clarity beyond that on Tuesday. When asked if he has had to plan on Hill not being involved in 2019, Reid said he hasn’t “even gone there,” and he’s “just letting it take its course.”
Officers were called to the home of Hill and fiancee Crystal Espinal — who share the residence with their 3-year-old son — on March 14, according to a police report from the Overland Park Police Department that listed a juvenile as the alleged victim.
On the report, Espinal was listed under "others involved,” while Hill’s name was absent. Officers were previously called to the same address to investigate a report of child abuse or neglect, but while Hill's name is listed on that report, the investigation for that one was subsequently closed three days later.
The March 14 case was turned over to the DA’s office for review, and the communications director for the Kansas Department of Children and Families told Yahoo Sports that a report had been received and an investigation was ongoing.
Reid was reminded Tuesday that the Chiefs were quick to release running back Kareem Hunt once a video surfaced of him shoving and kicking a woman in an incident in December, and was then asked if the Chiefs’ swiftness in that decision will have any impact on what they do with Hill.
“If we’re gonna make a move like that, it’s pretty well thought out,” Reid said. “So we try to gather the information and then go from there, and obviously allow law enforcement or whoever is involved in that [to] run its course, too.”
