A woman was killed late Thursday in North Topeka in the crash of a car that had twice led law enforcement on earlier chases that officers terminated for safety reasons, an official said.

Cheyenne N. Day, 21, of Topeka, was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to a Topeka hospital, where she was pronounced deceased, said Gretchen Spiker, communications director for Topeka's city government.

Law enforcement was not pursuing the car at the time it became involved in the one-vehicle crash in the 2300 block of N.W. Topeka Boulevard, she said.

'Speeds became too unsafe to continue'

Spiker said Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center dispatchers about 11:30 p.m. Thursday received a report that the car involved was being driven erratically.

Topeka police located that car and tried unsuccessfully to get the driver to stop, she said.

"TPD pursued the vehicle for a short time, until speeds became unsafe to continue," Spiker said. "TPD then terminated the pursuit."

The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office soon afterward tried to stop the car, she said.

"The driver again initiated a short pursuit, and SSO later terminated their pursuit," Spiker said.

Minutes later, law enforcement officers were called to the crash scene, she said.

The car's lone occupant was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to a Topeka hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased, Spiker said.

Topeka police were investigating circumstances of the crash, she said.
