Chelsea did what they needed to. No, that’s not to say that the fourth-place Blues emerged from Saturday’s see-saw match at Leicester City any closer to the third-place Foxes in the Premier League table.

But the 2-2 draw at the King Power Stadium — in which defender Antonio Rudiger scored two second-half goals — meant that Frank Lampard’s team also didn’t lose any ground in the standings. Given Leicester’s form this season, that’s no small feat.

In fact, the traveling fans has reason to believe an upset might be in the cards when Rudiger gave the visitors the lead less than a minute into the second half following a scoreless first.

It was no less than the visitors deserved after an excellent opening stanza. Frank Lampard’s team, which has been without injured American attacker Christian Pulisic for a full month, could’ve pulled in front on several occasions but failed to do so. And sure enough, it came back to bite the Blues.

The goal woke up the hosts; Leicester was all over Lampard’s side after that. Less than 10 minutes later, they were level though Harvey Barnes:

With the momentum now fully on their side, the home team kept going. But Chelsea also caught its breath, and it made for a gloriously open and highly entertaining end to the contest.

Still, it looked as though the Blues would troop back to London with nothing to show for their effort when Ben Chilwell put Brendan Rodgers’ men up 2-1 shortly after Barnes equalized:

Fortunately for the guests, Rudiger came to the rescue once again. Like he had earlier on, the big German center back strode into the box to head the ball past Kasper Schmeichel and into Leicester’s net with less than 20 minutes to play:

To their credit, neither team shut the game down after that. Both had opportunities to steal all three points as the final whistle approached. In the end, though, it was probably a fair result — and one that accurately reflects both teams’ place in the table.
