The NFL awarded Washington edge rusher Chase Young both the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month award and NFC Defensive Player of the Month honors for his play during December, the team announced Thursday.

Young is the first Washington player to win a player of the month award since former quarterback Kirk Cousins in November 2016 and the franchise’s first rookie to do so ever. He’s the sixth player in team history to win NFC Defensive Player of the Month after former linebacker London Fletcher was the last to do it in 2012.

The reigning No. 2 overall pick racked up 15 tackles, four quarterback hits, two sacks, two tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and a touchdown in four games during the month of December. He finished off a strong case for Defensive Rookie of the Year in Week 17, ending the season as the league leader among rookies in sacks (7.5), tackles for loss (10) and QB hits (tied for 1st with 12).

Young is looking to add to his resume Saturday when the Washington Football Team takes on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as part of Super Wild Card Weekend. The rookie has repeatedly expressed his excitement at the prospect of going after Tom Brady, who he’s wanted to sack since before he was even drafted.
