Charles Barkley calls Doug Jones' election victory in Alabama, 'a wake-up to Democrats'

Charles Barkley made headlines when he flew down to his home state this week to campaign for Democratic candidate Doug Jones in an effort to rally support in the 11th hour of Jones’ special Senate election race against Republican Roy Moore.

Following Jones’ razor-thin victory, Barkley was on hand to deliver his own hopeful postmortem on the historic race’s outcome and elucidated about his personal elation about Jones’ win.

Barkley also waxed philosophically about how he hopes Jones’ strategy for victory in a deep red state can reverberate beyond Tuesday night’s result.

“They’ve taken the black vote and the poor vote for granted for a long time. It’s time for democrats to get off their asses.” Barkley told CNN. “This is a wake up call for democrats to do better for black people & poor white people,”

Barkley’s political leanings have been malleable over the years. He’s described himself as a Republican and often criticized Democrats, but in this race, he was firmly opposed to Moore, who become much-maligned after his inappropriate past relations with underage girls were exposed last month.

The Auburn alums kept the kudos coming for Jones (and his wife), who got a thumbs-up from legend Bo Jackson:

Let’s leave this wild political night with this zinger at Sir Charles:
