Chapman wins two over Valley Heights

Mar. 25—The Chapman Fighting Irish baseball team opened the 2024 season with an impressive sweep of Blue Rapids-Valley Heights 11-1 and 18-0 Friday in Chapman.

Chapman's Cooper Lewis was dominant on the hill for the Irish giving up one hit and one run over five innings in the opener. Lewis struck out 11 batters in his 2024 debut and didn't surrender a walk.

The Irish jumped on Valley Heights pitching for eight hits and scored twice in the first and five times in the second inning. They put the game away with three runs in the third and a single run in the fourth for the early win.

Aven Woods had a pair of hits for Chapman as did Ben Griffis and Connor Cote-Boss. Griffis drove in three and Ray Whitehair had three RBI. The Irish were aided in the win by four Valley Heights errors and the Irish stole 11 bases in the five-inning game.

In game two, Chapman needed just two at bats to blast Valley Heights 18-0 after three innings. The Irish had nine hits led by Carson Hasenbank, Cade Hanney and Talon Landreville with two hits each.

Jed Moody got the win on the mound for Chapman with two innings of work allowing zero runs on zero hits while striking out two. Hanney tossed the third inning collecting a strike out.

The Irish move to 2-0 on the young season and will host Clay Center on Tuesday.
