Chad Knaus' laptop with race notes stolen from car
The laptop with notes for Sunday’s race was stolen from Chad Knaus’ rental car earlier this week.
Knaus, the crew chief for seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson, told the AP that he and his wife had parked in San Francisco on Wednesday and went to get some food. When they got back, the rear passenger window was smashed in and two briefcases were stolen. In one of the briefcases was Knaus’ computer with his notes for Sonoma, the road course where NASCAR is racing this weekend.
“It’s probably a good thing,” he said. “We haven’t run very well here over the last couple of years, so if I don’t have any notes to fall back on, we might come up with something new.’
There was cash in the briefcases and the other contained watercolor supplies of Knaus’ wife. While the AP article didn’t say that the briefcases were left in plain sight in the car — the couple’s luggage was untouched — we’ll use this post as a reminder to never leave your valuables in plain view in your parked car.
Knaus also said the data on the laptop was encrypted and contained just his Sonoma notes. We’re also betting that data is backed up on a server somewhere. A massive company like Hendrick Motorsports likely has a backup system in the cloud.
