Century Alpine skier Soren Krych lands 27th at state meet

Feb. 13—BIWABIK, Minn. — Century junior Soren Krych finished 27th Tuesday in the Minnesota Alpine Championships at Giants Ridge.

Krych, who was making his

second straight state appearance

and was disqualified a year ago after slipping on the first of two runs, was much smoother Tuesday.

"I feel very good about it," Krych said. "I feel like I did what I set out to do. I feel like I delivered because of all the preparing that I did. It really paid off."

Krych was in 22nd place after his first run, timed in 39.23. His second run was done in 42.25 which was 32nd best, leaving him 27th overall. His overall time was 1:21.48.

The winning time belonged to Irondale's Anthony Petkov (1:15.69.) Mankato West star Leo Demars was 11th in 1:18.17.

"It would have been easy for a kid who fell at state a year ago, this second time — if something felt a little bit off — that things could easily snowball the wrong direction," Rochester Alpine ski coach Curt Storlie said. "But slipping was the furthest thing from Soren's mind today. He went out and did exactly what we wanted him to do in that first run."

Krych said nerves were not a problem.

Krych's goal had been a top-20 All-State finish. He went after that in the second run but got held up on a couple of turns, costing him some speed. That left him just short of that top-20 finish.

Still, Storlie was thrilled with his effort and performance. He also believes that Krych has lots more growth in him.

"When you watch video of him from last year, he's just a different skier now," Storlie said of Krych's improvement. "Watching him now, I think it's just the tip of the iceberg for him. He has so much left for next year."

Krych came away from the meet inspired.

"Seeing some of the top guys at state and skiing with them, that was incredible," he said. "I feel inspired that I finished and that I have room to get better."
