August 4 is National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, and there is no better way to celebrate than enjoying the classic treat at a Fayetteville area bakery.

Whether it be milk chocolate or semi-sweet; chunks or chips; crispy-chewy or soft; large or small; area bakeries are serving their takes on the Massachusetts-born sweet.

Made with a few humble ingredients, the chocolate chip cookie has hardly changed since it was first developed in 1938 at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts.

Still, nothing quite compares to a chocolate chip cookie fresh out of the oven. Find out where to get your fix this National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day:

Superior Bakery

Superior Bakery owner Nick Poulos said his 2-inch in diameter chocolate chip cookies are made with unsalted sweet cream butter and milk chocolate chunks.

“The quality of the chocolate is the real key,” he said. “We don’t cut any corners.”

The Hope Mills Road bakery has served chocolate chip cookies since Poulos’s father opened it in 1956, but the current recipe has been used only for about a decade, he said.

“Nothing is prepackaged,” he said. “They’re baked fresh as we make them.”

Marci’s Cakes and Bakes

Cake decorator Hannah Davis said Marci’s Cakes and Bakes' chocolate chip cookies are “as big as your hand,” at 5 inches across.

“They are soft in the center, perfectly crisp on the outside,” she said, “and full of little chocolate chips so you get chocolate in every bite.”

Davis said the staff is focused on customer service, and enjoys when customers dine in.

“We’re like the family you didn’t know you needed,” she said.
