CBS Sports projects whether or not Florida remains in top 25

Florida football received a scare from the South Florida Bulls on Saturday night, escaping with a 31-28 victory in the Swamp.

The home team hardly had much to feel good about. The visitors ran all over the Gators’ defense while keeping the offense off balance well enough to keep it close.

Despite the lack of injury attrition, the win was a Pyrrhic one given Florida was favored by at least three scores by pretty much everyone. The poor performance on the field one week after a similar outing in the loss to the Kentucky Wildcats does not bode well for the Orange and Blue.

With the voters getting set to cast their Week 3 ballots, CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson took a stab at what he thinks the AP Top 25 will look like on Sunday. His outlook is actually a bit more bullish than one might expect, predicting that the Gators cling to the final spot in the polls at No. 25.

While Florida’s near-upset at the hands of USF is going to lead to a drop in the rankings, the win over Utah still holds enough weight this early in the season to keep the Gators inside the top 25.

That is certainly an optimistic outlook, and the Utes have shown improvement since their season-opener in Gainesville, but anyone who watched the game would find it hard to believe the Gators have earned the right to remain among the best in the nation.
