Catch some air and send in your clips for Cat Classic snowboarding video

Jan. 22—Attention all Cataloochee park rats — grab your gear, a friend and catch some footage shredding at the Mountain for inclusion in an upcoming snowboarding video.

Riders of all ages are invited to submit their clips of surfing the snow to be featured in a snowboarding video premiere, The Cat Classic.

"We want people to have fun and submit whatever they want," said Jared Lee, one of the snowboarders organizing The Cat Classic. "Because in the end, once your video comes on the screen, everybody's gonna yell for you and support you no matter how good or what skillset you are. People are just gonna be excited that you participated."

The video compilation will debut at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Salty Dog's Seafood and Grill in Maggie Valley.

Those with the best clips will be chosen as winners. There is a men's and women's division, each with two age classes — 14 and under and 15 and up. First-place winners will get $100, and second and third-place winners will get prizes from one of the film's sponsors — Big Brother Boards, Maggie Valley Skis & Tees and Recess.

The idea of a video contest was sparked by Lee and other members of the Cataloochee snowboarding community as a fun incentive for fellow riders at the mountain.

"The second a kid learns how to go down the mountain good, they're trying to find a way to catch air after that. It's just a progression," Lee said. "We want to help grow and encourage progression."

Lee works at Maggie Valley Skis & Tees and has been snowboarding at Cataloochee since he first strapped on a board 25 years ago. He recalled growing up during a time when the mountain would host big air contests, rail jams and other events.

"We don't have any of that anymore," Lee said. "It's basically like it's practice day all the time, and there's never a game day."

Lee and the team behind The Cat Classic are hopeful the contests will build excitement and community on the mountain.

"We want to see boarders do something together as a community," Lee said. "So when we all meet at Salty Dogs, you get to see people from the community, young and old, that you might not normally know, but you share the same common interest with."

The clips must be trimmed down to a minute long and submitted by Saturday, Feb. 24, to The Cat Classic Instagram @TheCatClassic or emailed to
