Carrington tops Four Winds/Minnewaukan in Division A Region 2 third-place game

Feb. 22—MAYVILLE — Carrington kept its postseason hopes alive with a 52-41 win over Four Winds/Minnewaukan in the third-place game of the Division A Region 2 girls basketball tournament Thursday in Mayville.

The win means Carrington qualifies for a play-in game on Saturday, also to be played at Mayville State University's Wellness Center. Carrington plays Valley City at 1 p.m.

If the Cardinals win Saturday, they'll qualify for the state tournament, to be played Feb. 29 through March 2 in Minot.

The game was tied at 10 before Carrington outscored the Indians 19-8 in the second quarter to take a 29-18 lead at halftime. Madison Johnson and Edyn Hoornaert both had nine points for Carrington in the first half.

Carrington at one time was up 35-22 in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, a 3-pointer from Suri Gourd cut the Carrington lead to 42-32, but Carrington scored soon after, making it 44-32 with six minutes to play.

A Threadgold 3-pointer, a Carrington rebound after a Four Winds/Minnewaukan miss and a free throw from Johnson made it 48-32 with 3:50 left.

Carrington held double-digit leads for the rest of the game, although Gourd had an NBA-range 3-pointer with one minute remaining and two layups shortly after that to serve as late-game highlights for the Indians.

Four Winds/Minnewaukan ends its season 11-12. Carrington now is 17-7.

Gourd had 23 points and six rebounds for Four Winds/Minneawaukan. Sophie Robertson had 11 rebounds and seven points, while Cailee Hanson had eight points. The Indians were 16-of-40 from the field and 3-of-8 from the line.

Hoornaert had 17 points for Carrington, followed by Johnson with 13 and Kacie Rexin with nine. The Cardinals were 15-of-47 from the field and 14-of-22 from the line.
