The latest seat in the quarterback carousel has been taken.

The Carolina Panthers have traded for New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold.

The Panthers sent a sixth-round pick in 2021 and a second- and fourth-rounder in 2022 to Gang Green on Monday.

In case one is wondering, the Jets will play the Panthers in Carolina during the upcoming season.

Darnold was the third overall pick by the Jets out of USC in 2018.

He had a rough go with the Jets, due to injuries, health issues, and abject failure of the Adam Gase regime in New York.

Darnold was 13-25 as a starter, throwing for 8,097 yards with 45 touchdowns and 39 interceptions.

This cinches the fact the Jets will draft a quarterback in the second overall slot on April 29. The team has been associated with BYU quarterback Zach Wilson.

“I want to publicly acknowledge the commitment, dedication, and professionalism Sam displayed while with the Jets. He is a tough-minded, talented football player whose NFL story has not been written yet,” Jets GM Joe Douglas said on the team’s website. “While all these things are true, this move is in the short- and long-term best interests for both this team and him. We thank Sam for all of his work on behalf of this organization and wish him well as he continues his career.”

Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence is a virtual certainty to go first to the Cincinnati Bengals.

In Carolina, he finds a quarterback situation that has Teddy Bridgewater as the starter. The former Saint and Viking signed a three-year contract before last season.

Matt Rhule will be heading into his second year as coach of the Panthers. He has a new quarterback in Darnold and also currently sits in the eighth slot of the first round.

Another former New York Jets quarterback taken in the first round from USC wished Darnold luck in his new home.
