Cardinals sign RHP Norris

Bud Norris agreed to a one-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.

Norris, 32, worked out of the bullpen with the Los Angeles Angels last season and was effective before the All-Star break. A knee injury bothered Norris most of the second half, when his numbers seemed to reflect an issue.

Norris posted 19 saves in 23 chances with a 4.21 ERA in 2017 with 74 strikeouts in 62 innings.

The Cardinals are dealing with an overhauled bullpen and enter spring training without certainty as to the pecking order of relievers in late innings.

Norris had a 2.23 ERA before the All-Star break. Opponents hit just .183/.272/.275, but Norris posted a 7.01 ERA after mid-July.

Trevor Rosenthal underwent Tommy John surgery, Juan Nicasio signed with the Seattle Mariners in free agency and Seung-hwan Oh also left, joining the Texas Rangers.

Luke Gregerson came on board as a free agent and could be the favorite for the closer's role in 2018.
