Back on September 28 some folks wondered if Adam Wainwright‘s final appearance in 2018 was his final appearance as a Cardinal or, for that matter, his final appearance in the big leagues. It was not. The Cardinals just announced that they have signed him to a one-year deal for 2019.

Wainwright, 37, made only eight starts for the Cardinals in 2018 due to elbow problems, finishing with a 4.46 ERA and in 40 and a third innings of work. He has been a below average pitcher when healthy for the past three seasons, in fact, and only pitched in seven games in 2015. One has to go back to 2014, when he won 20 games and posted a fantastic 2.38 ERA, to find him in the form which made him a fixture in the Cardinals rotation for so many years.

He will get at least one more year, however, to show the Cardinals what he can do when healthy.
