Cardinals fall to Zizzers in district opener

Feb. 29—The Webb City girls basketball team's season ended Wednesday after a 57-34 loss at the hands of the West Plains Zizzers in the first round of their Class 5 District 6 tourney at Marshfield High School.

The seventh-seeded Cardinals trailed by just four after the first period, but the No. 2 Zizzers (20-7) outscored Webb City 9-7 in the second stanza to take a 20-14 lead into halftime.

West Plains extended its lead to 38-24 after outscoring the Cardinals 18-10 in the third period. West Plains netted similar results in the final frame, outscoring the Cardinals 57-34 tom claim the 23-point win.

Addie Burns led the Cardinals with 13 points. Mia Robbins and Abby Sergeant each had six.

Alyssa Joiner claimed game-high honors with 27 points and Olivia Lawson finished with 16.

The Cardinals wrapped up their season at 11-16.

Also in Class 5 District 6 action, fifth-seeded Carl Junction (15-11) topped fourth-seeded McDonald County (20-7) 56-54 to advance to the semifinals. The Bulldogs will face No. 1 seed and tournament host Marshfield (23-4) at 6 p.m. Friday.
