Los Angeles (AFP) - The Arizona Cardinals cut offensive tackle Desmond Harrison on Wednesday after he was charged with assault following an alleged attack on a woman.

The Cardinals confirmed in a statement on the NFL team's website that the 25-year-old had been released, soon after police in North Carolina confirmed he had been charged with strangulation and assault on a female.

No further information about the alleged assault was immediately available.

Harrison joined the Cardinals in June after he was released by the Cleveland Browns.

Despite a promising start to his rookie season last year, where he made eight starts for the Browns, Harrison was later released by the team after reports of indiscipline.

The 6ft 6in (1.98m), 292 pound (132kg) Harrison only arrived in the NFL last year after being claimed by the Browns as an undrafted free agent.
