Cardinals activate RHP Wainwright off DL

The St. Louis Cardinals activated right-hander Adam Wainwright from the 10-day disabled list to start Sunday's game against the San Diego Padres.

Wainwright was on the DL due to inflammation in his pitching elbow.

Wainwright will be making his first start since April 17.

In a corresponding move, right-hander John Brebbia was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Brebbia is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in six games with St. Louis and suffered the loss in Saturday's 2-1, 13-inning contest with the Padres.

Wainwright, 36, is 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA in three starts this season.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told reporters on Saturday night that Wainwright is working on tweaking his delivery to put less strain on the elbow.

"I think he is adaptable and he is a fierce competitor," Matheny said. "He's been working on some things to try and make it feel right and work right. We've had good reports with what we saw in (rehab outings at Double-A) Springfield. He was moving it around, keeping guys off balance and locating it where he wanted to."

Wainwright has a 147-83 career mark with a 3.29 ERA since reaching the majors with the Cardinals in 2005. The three-time All-Star has won 19 or more games on four occasions.
