Capitals navy third jersey is the NHL's best seller originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The Capitals have gotten off to a strong start this year, generating excitement among fans even with in-person attendance still stifled by the pandemic and a recent three-game losing streak.
While we can't measure the buzz in ticket sales this season, the popularity of the team's new navy third jersey might speak as loud as the cheers.
The top three items sold on the league website between opening night on Jan. 13 and Feb. 1 have all been Capitals navy jerseys, according to The Athletic. The outlet checked in with Fanatics, which runs the NHL's official shop.
To no one's surprise, Alex Ovechkin's navy jersey was the top-seller, with Tom Wilson's and T.J. Oshie's taking the second and third spots.
The jersey design was adapted from the Navy tops worn during the 2018 Stadium Series game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Naval Academy in Annapolis with some modifications, including a "W" with three stars that pay homage to fans and frontline workers in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
The Caps are 1-1 in the navy threads this season, most recently sporting them in Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.
While we can't say they're a good luck charm yet, they are certainly among the more dapper in the league. The Caps will sport the navy unis again on February 21 when they host the Rangers at Capital One Arena.
