The Capitals claimed Toronto Maple Leafs winger Nicolas Aube-Kubel off waivers Saturday and loaned center Garrett Pilon back to their AHL affiliate Hershey Bears, the team announced.

Aube-Kubel, 26, appeared in six games for Toronto this season but was unable to hold down a regular spot in their lineup. He managed only two shots on goal with no points in 54 minutes of ice time before being waived. The Capitals claimed him ahead of Saturday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes, but he’s unlikely to suit up for the game.

The move comes just three days after the Capitals placed three players on Injured Reserve including wingers T.J. Oshie (lower body) and Beck Malenstyn (finger surgery). Both players are expected to miss significant time, with no timetable for Oshie and Malenstyn expected to spend the next six to eight weeks rehabbing from his procedure.

Washington originally called up Pilon and winger Sonny Milano from Hershey as corresponding moves for the injury announcements. While Milano is in line to make his Capitals debut on Saturday, the team opted to add Aube-Kubel instead of making Pilon a healthy scratch.

Aube-Kubel won (and dented) the Stanley Cup after joining the Colorado Avalanche in November last season. The 2014 second-round pick saw limited ice time but managed to put up 11 goals and 11 assists in 67 games. Though he didn’t log a single point in the playoffs, Aube-Kubel made his presence felt with 49 hits in 14 games.
