Caps announce Capital One will be helmet ad sponsor for 2021 originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

The Capitals named banking and credit card company Capital One as their helmet sponsor for the 2021 season Tuesday, just one day after the NHL approved sponsored helmet decals to help teams make up for the lost revenue caused by playing without fans in the stands.

Washington joined the New Jersey Devils as the first teams to release the name of their helmet sponsors. The 2.25” x 3.75” Capital One logo will appear on each side of every players’ helmet for all regular season and playoff games. Already locked into a 10-year contract as the sponsor of the Capitals’ arena, the Capital One brand now becomes even more synonymous with hockey in D.C.

"Monumental Sports & Entertainment has a long-standing relationship with Capital One, and we are thrilled to add a valuable piece of real estate to their portfolio as the Capitals helmet entitlement partner," Monumental Sports & Entertainment President of Business Operations and CCO Jim Van Stone said in a statement. "We are excited to further grow our relationship with Capital One through a unique, first-of-a-kind opportunity in hockey that greatly showcases the brand across local, national and international audiences."

Capital One is also the “presenting partner” of the Capitals’ reverse retro alternate jerseys that are set to debut this season. According to Sports Business Daily, the Capitals plan to release another jersey with the help of Capital One after Jan. 1.

The Devils partnered with Prudential Financial for their helmet sponsor. New Jersey’s arena has been named the Prudential Center since 2007.
