Canelo Alvarez, Caleb Plant both driven to become ‘undisputed’
Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant are both focused intently on making history Saturday.
For Alvarez, a victory over Plant would make him the first undisputed supper middleweight champion. The Mexican star has never held all the belts in any division in the four-belt era.
Of course, if Plant wins, he would earn that distinction. He also will have recorded one of the greatest upsets in recent history.
Yes, a lot will be at stake at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“Only five male fighters in the history of boxing have accomplished becoming undisputed champion,” Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) said at the final news conference on Wednesday. “I want to be the sixth. That’s the only thing on my mind.”
Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) knows the odds are against him but doesn’t think much of his critics.
“I’ve been the underdog before,” he said. “It’s a place I like to be. I like people rooting against me. It gives me extra motivation, but when you’re fighting for undisputed status, you don’t need much more motivation than that.”
