COVID-19 cases: Almost half of Ontario's new coronavirus cases from Toronto, Quebec sees highest single-day case increase

16,432 active COVID-19 cases in Canada: 166,156 diagnoses, 9,481 deaths and 140,243 recoveries (as of Oct. 5, 7:30 p.m. ET)

  • Alberta - 1,783 active cases (18,935 total cases, including 280 deaths, 16,872 resolved)

4 new COVID-19 deaths in B.C.

B.C. reported four additional COVID-19 deaths in the province on Monday, with a total of 358 new cases throughout the weekend.

There are currently 1,353 active cases in the B.C. and 3,010 people are under “active public health monitoring” after an identified exposure to known cases.

B.C. has also reported three new outbreaks in health care facilitates, Langley Lodge, White Rock Seniors Village and one Chartwell Crescent Gardens. There are active outbreaks at 16 long-term care or assisted-living facilities in the province.

There is also a new community outbreak at the MSJ Valhalla Distribution Centre in the Fraser Health region.

Quebec sees highest daily case count in for the province

Quebec reported 1,191 new COVID-19 cases, the fourth day of new cases exceeding 1,000 in the province. The cumulative total of infections in Quebec is 79,650.

The majority of cases are in Montreal (329), the Quebec City region (265) and Laval (173).

There are 27 more people in hospitals compared to the previous day, with 62 people currently in ICU.

Two additional deaths occurred in Quebec in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the province to 5,884.

Toronto continues to see the most COVID-19 cases in Ontario

Ontario reported 615 cases of COVID-19 on Monday after 38,200 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours across the province. There are still 68,006 cases currently under investigation in Ontario.

The majority of new cases are in Toronto, with 289 confirmed cases in city, followed by Peel (88) and Ottawa (81). Of the newly reported cases, 58 per cent are people under the age of 40.

Dr. David Williams, Ontario's chief medical officer of health, identified that there has been an “uptick” in older age group, including people over the age of 60, 70 and 80, which is a “concerning” trends that needs to be monitored.

As of Monday, an additional 541 cases have been resolved in Ontario, bringing the total resolved cases in to 46,360, with 54,814 cumulative cases in the province.

In long-term care facilities, seven more cases in residents were reported in these settings, in addition to four workers. There are currently 50 active outbreaks in long-term care homes in Ontario, with 124 active cases in residents and 158 in staff.

The province is reporting 43 Ontarians are currently in ICU and 26 are on a ventilator.

In school settings, 56 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Monday, with 31 COVID-19 infections in students, eight in staff and 17 not identified. In total, Ontario has seen 539 cases in schools.

There have been five more COVID-19 deaths in the province, bringing the total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 2,980.

Updates from the rest of Canada

Alberta: Over the weekend Alberta saw 578 new COVID-19 cases, with 1,783 active cases in the province. Eight new deaths are being reported over the last 72 hours. Of the active cases in the province, 982 are from the Edmonton area alone. There are 319 confirmed cases in 149 schools in Alberta, with outbreaks declared in 65 schools.

Manitoba: A total of 51 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Manitoba on Monday, with the majority of cases in the Winnipeg region (35). Public health officials in the province are advising the public about possible exposures at three schools, IQRA School and College Louis-Riel in Winnipeg, and Stonewall Collegiate in Stonewall. One cohort has been moved to remote learning from IQRA School. A possible exposure site has also been identified as Chaise Corydon in Winnipeg after a private gathering on Sept. 26.

New Brunswick: Provincial authorities reported two new COVID-19 cases in the province, both linked to possible exposures on flights. One individual is between the age of 20 and 29 and travelled from Mexico City to Toronto on Sept. 29 and is now in the Moncton region. The second is between the ages of 60 and 69 and travelled from Toronto to Moncton on Sept. 30 and is now in the St. John region.

Nova Scotia: No new cases were reported in Nova Scotia on Monday and 576 tests were completed in the last 24 hours. There is currently one person in ICU and 1,020 cases are now resolved.

Newfoundland and Labrador: No new cases were reported in Newfoundland and Labrador on Monday. There are currently four active cases in the province.
