Caleb Williams is already eliciting lavish praise from NFL insiders
The 2024 NFL draft is a full year away. We have to deal with the 2023 NFL draft first, but a lot of NFL teams are already quite aware of the big prize which might be part of their future: USC quarterback Caleb Williams.
There has been a lot of debate about the 2023 draft class and the 2023 quarterback class. There is zero debate about the 2024 quarterback class in one obvious respect: Caleb Williams is the best pick on the board. Teams without settled quarterback situations will move heaven and earth to climb to No. 1 if they need to. If a team with an established quarterback is at No. 1 in next year’s draft, it will be in a position to fetch quite a haul in a trade with another team.
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic talked to NFL insiders about Caleb Williams. You can see some of the quotes below. The odds of Caleb not being the top pick in the 2024 NFL draft are extremely small. The only way he might not go No. 1 is if a super-duperstar emerges at a non-quarterback position, and the team with the top pick has that precise positional need. Otherwise, Caleb Williams is going to be the first player off the board next year. He would become USC’s third top pick of all time, following Keyshawn Johnson in 1996 and Carson Palmer in 2003.
