Caleb Salazar scores four goals in Greenville Lions' 5-1 soccer win over Lucas Lovejoy

Feb. 26—LUCAS — Caleb Salazar scored a career-high four goals to lead the Greenville Lions to a big 5-1 District 13-5A soccer win at Lucas Lovejoy on Friday night.

The Lions avenged a 1-0 loss to Lovejoy on Jan. 30 as they moved into a tie for third place in the district standings with Sherman. Both teams are 4-3-1 in district play. McKinney North leads at 7-0-1. Lovejoy is second at 6-2.

The Lions, now 9-4-2 for the season, are to return to district play at home on Tuesday against Melissa, which is 0-7 in district play. The varsity match is to start first at 5:30 p.m.

Greenville won 4-0 at Melissa on Feb. 2.

Josh Rojas scored the Lions' fifth goal off an assist by Kevin Fraire, who also assisted Salazar with his second goal.

Miguel Garcia assisted Salazar with his third goal.

Salazar now has a team-high 18 goals for the season to go with three assists. His four goals were a career-high.

"Getting to coach a team like this is a lot of fun," said Lions coach Christopher James. "Caleb is such a dynamic player and his teammates have an enormous amount of confidence in him. It is amazing to see a player do great things but when your teammates also believe in that greatness, it really speaks volumes about the kind of player and person he is." — The Greenville Lady Lions lost their District 13-5A home match 11-0 on Friday night to the district leader Lucas Lovejoy. Lovejoy improved to 14-1-4 for the season and 7-0-1 in district play. The Leopards have outscored their district opponents 49-1.

Greenville dropped to 2-16-1 for the season and 0-8 in district play. The Lady Lions are to play next on Tuesday at Melissa.
