Cal will have the most Super Bowl starting QBs when Jared Goff starts Super Bowl LIII

Believe it or not, Cal has become the most prolific school in producing Super Bowl quarterbacks.

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff will be the fourth Cal QB to start in a Super Bowl when the Rams play the New England Patriots on Feb. 3 in Super Bowl LIII.

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers started against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010. Craig Morton made a Super Bowl start for the Dallas Cowboys and a Super Bowl start for the Denver Broncos. Joe Kapp was the Minnesota Vikings QB against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl IV in 1969.

QBs who played at Cal have 6 Super Bowl starts

You’ll note that the tweet above lists five Cal QBs with Super Bowl starts when you count Goff. It counts Vince Ferragamo, who started the 1979 Super Bowl for the Los Angeles Rams. Ferragamo played two seasons at Cal before transferring to Nebraska for his final two seasons of eligibility. We’re not counting Ferragamo officially as a Cal QB.

Goff will break a 4-way tie

With Ferragamo not being counted, Cal was tied with three other schools for having the most Super Bowl QBs before the Rams’ win on Sunday. Alabama (Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Ken Stabler), Notre Dame (Daryle Lamonica, Joe Theismann, Joe Montana) and Purdue (Len Dawson, Bob Griese, Drew Brees) have each had three quarterbacks start a Super Bowl.

Tom Brady is the only Michigan QB to start a Super Bowl

The four Cal QBs to start Super Bowls have a combined five appearances among them. That’s still short of Patriots QB Tom Brady. He’s set to make his ninth Super Bowl start on Feb. 3 and is the only Michigan QB to start in a Super Bowl.
