Who is Caeleb Dressel? Get to know Team USA swimmer looking to join Michael Phelps in Olympic history

Team USA is off to a fast start in the pool at the Tokyo Olympics, collecting six medals on Sunday, and it can only get better when Caeleb Dressel enters the competition.

Now in his second Games, Dressel is a popular pick to win numerous gold medals in 2021, and he has the chance to join elite company alongside Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz as swimmers to win six gold medals at a single Olympic Games.

Dressel got his first taste of gold alongside Phelps in 2016. Since then, he won numerous gold medals at the 2019 World Championships and set the world record in the 100-meter butterfly.

After an impressive showing at the USA Swimming Olympic Trials in June, Dressel could leave Tokyo as the fastest swimmer in the world.

When will Caeleb Dressel compete at the Olympics?

It will be a busy time for Dressel. He qualified for the 50- and 100-meter freestyle and the 100-meter butterfly individually, the 4x100m freestyle and medley and could compete in the mixed medley relays and 800m freestyle relay. So far, this is his schedule (All times ET):

4X100m freestyle: Final - July 25: USA wins gold

100m freestyle: Final - July 29: Dressel wins first individual gold medal

100m butterfly: Final - July 30: Dressel sets world record on way to gold

50m freestyle: Final - July 31: Wins gold with Olympic-record time

4X100m medley: Heats: July 30, 8:50 a.m. Final: July 31, 10:30 p.m.

How old is he?

Dressel is 24 and will turn 25 next month. He was 19 when he competed in Rio De Janeiro.

How tall is he?

Dressel is 6-foot-3, just above the averages of Olympic finalists from 2012 and 2016.

Where is he from?

Dressel is from Orange Park, Florida, just south of Jacksonville.

He didn't go far for college, attending the University of Florida and graduating in 2018. He broke numerous records at the Division I Championships and is 10-time NCAA champion. He has a tattoo of a gator on his left arm.

Is he married?

Dressel is a newlywed. He married fellow swimmer Meghan Haila, whom he met while in high school, in February 2021.

How did he do at the 2016 Olympics?

In his first Olympic Games, Dressel won gold in the 4x100-meter medley relay and the 4x100-meter freestyle relay, on the same team as Phelps. Individually, he finished sixth in the 100-meter freestyle.

Earlier this month, Dressel was one of four US Tokyo 2020 swim team members selected as captains. His co-captains are Ryan Murphy, Allison Schmitt and Simone Manuel.
