Byron lives up to its seeding at state gymnastics meet, finishing eighth

Feb. 23—ST. PAUL — The Byron gymnastics team was seeded eighth in the eight-team Class 1A state meet Friday at Roy Wilkins Auditorium.

And that is exactly where the Bears finished, ending with a 138.025 score. That was barely off the mark of seventh-place finisher Worthington (138.125). Becker was the meet's champion, scoring 143.575 points.

It was the second time in the last three years that Byron had reached the state meet.

"I'm proud of them," Bears coach Charro Coleman said. "I'm really happy with the way they competed even though the (balance) beam kind of got us again."

As was also true in the Section 1 meet, the beam turned into a problem. Byron finished with a team score of 33.025 there. The Bears finished the season consistently in the 33s on beam after setting a school record of 36.9 in the event just before the new year.

Byron's best event was the vault where it scored a 35.625. Seventh-grader Sydney Portner led the way there with a 9.175.

Portner actually had the Bears' top score in every event.

Byron has three athletes who will be competing in Saturday's individual state gymnastics meet. They are Lydia Evans (all-around), Portner (all-around) and Norah Brown (vault). That begins at 11 a.m., again at Roy Wilkins Auditorium.
