Byrd golfers win LHSAA Regional; James Holtsclaw tops leaderboard

Despite a dominating win in the LHSAA Division I Golf Regionals, Byrd coach Meredith Duncan said her team can play even better than the 12-stroke win they picked up Monday at the Oak Wing Golf Club in Alexandria.

“I felt like we left some shots out there today,” Duncan said. “I saw all five boys hit some good putts that burned the edges. We didn’t play the par 5s as well as we should and as we go over our stats, we will figure out who needs to do better at what.”

With senior James Holtsclaw leading the way with a 5-under, 67, the defending state champions finished with a 7-under 281 to top Benton, which shot a plus-5 293. Benton’s Kade Bryant and Northwood’s Ryder Briggs tied for second shooting 4 under 68s.

Holtsclaw’s success was built around keeping a level head, staying confident on the course and making the fewest possible mistakes.

“It feels great to have the chance to go to three in a row,” Holtsclaw said. “I really like how the team is playing going into state, and we can do something special.”

Also shooting well for Byrd were Brooks Reid (71), Grant Reagan (71), Shep Smith (72) and Campbell Gosslee (75).

“It feels great,” Reagan said. “I think a lot of our team’s success came from our practice round Sunday. We all played really well together, and it gave us a lot of confidence heading into the tournament.”

Benton’s Cason Toms (70) and Miller Davis (73) were also top 12 finishers.

“Everybody started off slow, but hung tough and never got down,” Duncan said. “Patience and confidence were the keys.”

Holtsclaw was the anchor for a team that will compete Monday and Tuesday at The Wetlands in Lafayette for the LHSAA state title.

“Obviously, James is one of the best players in the state. Not only is he physically talented, but he is very intentional in the way he practices and the way he approaches the game.”
