Byng's Cooper signs with Seminole State College

Mar. 9—Not too long after scoring 34 points to help the Byng Lady Pirates knock off Oklahoma Christian School for third place at the Boomerang Classic at Dale, senior guard Alona Cooper sat down and chatted with Seminole State College head coach Rita Story-Schell.

It was at that moment, that Cooper was pretty sure she was going to be a future SSC Belles basketball player.

Cooper made it official Thursday when she signed to play college basketball for coach Story-Schell and her Seminole State team.

"At the Dale Tournament, Coach Story came and talked to me after our game against OCS. I knew I had already wanted to go to Seminole because of how welcoming and caring she is. After talking to her, I knew it would be a good place to call home," Cooper said during her signing ceremony.

Story-Schell was also tickled Cooper will be joining the Seminole State girls basketball program this fall.

"Alona brings so much talent to our team — her ability to score, her length and her work ethic," Story-Schell told The Ada News. "We are excited for her to play for Seminole State College next year."

Cooper averaged 18.3 points per game during her senior campaign. She also gave some consideration to Murray State College in Tishomingo and Western Oklahoma State College in Altus. Cooper also had contact from a few out-of-state schools.

But after taking an official visit to Seminole State, Cooper said it kind of sealed the deal.

"I just liked the atmosphere and how much the coach cares about her players," she said. "And It's only 30 minutes from my house."
