Michael Jordan joins DraftKings as special advisor originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
“I enjoy it, it’s a hobby.”
The words of Michael Jordan — originally from a 1-on-1 interview with NBC Sports Ahmad Rashad before Game 1 of the 1993 NBA Finals, and recently depicted in Episode 6 of “The Last Dance” — addressing reports that his gambling habit bordered on being a problem.
Though not problematic, Jordan has now taken that hobby to a new, and professional, level. On Wednesday, DraftKings announced that Jordan is joining the digital gaming and betting company as a special advisor.
“Michael Jordan is among the most important figures in sports and culture, who forever redefined the modern athlete and entrepreneur,” said DraftKings co-founder and CEO Jason Robins in a statement. “The strategic counsel and business acumen Michael brings to our board is invaluable, and I am excited to have him join our team.”
That excitement should have only swelled when Business Insider reported a 12% bump in DraftKings stock upon the news of Jordan’s appointment.
GOATs gonna GOAT.
A press release from DraftKings says Jordan’s input will come on a range of topics, from “company strategy, product development, inclusion, equity and belonging, marketing activities” and beyond.
Jordan was recently reported by ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan to be a key intermediary in talks between NBA owners and players regarding the league’s player-led walkout. Jordan Brand also committed $100 million over ten years to organizations advocating for issues of social justice and racial equality back in June.
