Feb. 3—SULPHUR SPRINGS — In what was a battle of state-ranked teams, Bullard rallied to defeat Sulphur Springs, 3-1, Friday in a non-conference match that took place in Sulphur Springs.
The Lady Panthers (11-1, 4-0) came into the fray ranked No. 10 in Class 4A in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association Poll, while Sulphur Springs (12-3) was ranked No. 20.
The Ladycats leaped out to a 1-0 lead by scoring the first goal of the evening with about 19:00 minutes left to play in the first half.
Seven minutes later, the Lady Panthers tied the score when forward Paige Barrett sent a well-place corner kick into Addy Cummings who deposited the ball into the goal on a header.
Rylie Jo Garner was credited with the match-winning goal when she scored off of a free kick by Rylie Graul that came with 16:00 to play in regulation.
Bullard (11-1, 4-0) was able to add an insurance run with 3:00 left in the tilt. Lady Panther goal keeper Ramzee Matejka advanced the ball up to Barrett, who beat the Sulphur Springs keeper, one-on-one.
"All of the girls did so well on the pitch, showing adversity, coming back from being scored on, as well as the persistence to protect their goal under pressure," Bullard head girl's soccer coach Tiffany Cooksey said. "Sulphur Springs was one of the toughest matches we have had this season and they are a great team."
Bullard was also victorious in the junior varsity match, winning, 3-2.
The Lady Panthers will return to district play Tuesday by hosting Brownsboro. The junior varsity match will get under way at 5:30 and will be followed by the varsity affair.
