Buffs stomp past Poteau in decisive win

Mar. 5—The Buffs were determined to redeem themselves and take a win inside the Hook.

McAlester hosted Poteau on Tuesday at Hook Eales Stadium, where the Buffs defeated the Pirates 3-1.

"I thought we played with great energy and intensity," coach Rashaud Buie said after the game.

"That was our focus yesterday at practice because I felt like we were very flat in our first game — which I told them that was my fault and we were going to fix it. And they came out and fixed it," he said.

McAlester wasted no time in getting the ball into goal territory, giving the Buffs early momentum. After a couple of failed goal attempts from the Buffs, Jaime Fernandez took an opportunity from a corner kick to head the ball into the back of the net, giving McAlester an early 1-0 lead ten minutes into the first half.

McAlester put pressure on Poteau, fighting for possession and getting the ball downfield. Caleb Judkins and William Alejandro took goal attempts, but were missed. Lucas Zietz stopped a big penalty kick from Poteau, stopping any chance of the Pirates scoring.

Poteau continued looking for opportunities to cross and score, but the Buffs wouldn't allow it. To seal the end of the first half, Ronaldo Martinez shot and scored another goal for the Buffs, giving them the 2-0 lead over Poteau at half.

During the second half, both teams went back and forth on the field looking for goal opportunities. Six minutes into the second half, Jaime Carranza passed to Judkins from the right — giving Judkins the opportunity to send the ball to the back of the net, lifting McAlester to a 3-0 score over Poteau.

The Pirates did manage to get a goal with less than ten minutes of game time left, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Buffs.

Up next for McAlester, the Buffs travel to Coweta on Friday to face the Tigers at 8 p.m.
