Buffs rally to win over Red Oak

Mar. 29—The Buffs got hot, and never looked back.

McAlester hosted Red Oak Friday at Mike Deak Field, where the Buffaloes blasted out late to take an 11-7 win over the Eagles.

Red Oak struck first, scoring five runs in the first two inning to lead over the Buffs. But McAlester kept its focus, and punched right back in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Ayden Shumway led off the inning with a walk, putting a runner on the bags. Ethan Watkins later followed with a high-flying ball to the center field fence, scoring Shumway and putting the Buffs on the board.

Red Oak responded in the next frame, scoring a pair of runs to extend the lead out to six.

The Buffs stayed undeterred, and kept battling at the plate. Brayden Phillips put a ball into play in the bottom of the fifth inning to score a run, and Shumway followed with a drill to left to score another.

Later as the bases were loaded, Jaxon Lauerman blasted a ball into left field beyond the fielder, clearing the bases and putting McAlester within a run. Lauerman didn't stay there long, using a passed ball opportunity to take home and tie up the game at 7-7.

The McAlester momentum kept flowing in the bottom of the next inning, with knocks from Gunner Hodgell and Phillips putting the Buffs out in front. Following back-to-back singles from Shumway and Spencer Stinchcomb, Watkins used a line drive to the outfield to score two runs and extend the lead to four.

That slammed the door shut on Red Oak, with the Buffalo defense holding off the Eagles to seal the win.

Lauerman and Watkins led the way at the plate with three RBIs each, followed by Phillips with two, and Shumway with one. Lauerman got the win on the mound, with the combined efforts of he and Max Harmon striking out six.

Next up for McAlester, the Buffs will host Broken Bow Saturday at noon.
