Buffs fall in opening battle at Tulsa

Mar. 1—The Buffs started the season with a battle.

McAlester traveled to Tulsa to face off against Union Friday in the baseball season opener, with the Buffs fighting but falling 6-1.

Union struck first in the bottom of the first inning, but the Buffalo defense went to work to keep that as the only run through the next frame. In the second inning, Gunner Hodgell drilled a line drive double to score Caden Lesnau and tie up the game at 1-1.

Defensive efforts took over until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Union scored five runs to jump back into the lead. Although the Buffs kept battling to the end, their opponent managed one more run to help seal away the win.

Hodgell led McAlester at the plate, going 1-3 with an RBI. Max Harmon got the start on the mound, with Ayden Shumway later coming in as relief and striking out three batters.

Next up for McAlester, the Buffs will travel to Durant Monday before hosting the Lions Tuesday at Mike Deak Field for the home opener and back end of the district matchup.
