Buffs fall in battle with Tahlequah

Apr. 8—The Buffs never stopped fighting.

McAlester hosted Tahlequah in early week district action Monday at Mike Deak Field, where the Buffs battled but fell 11-0.

The Tigers put a runner on the bags in the opening half of the first inning, but he'd be stranded as the Buffalo defense put a stop to the threat. On the flip side, McAlester loaded up the bases with two outs following a walk for Ganon Mullins, a single up the middle for Brayden Phillips, and Ayden Shumway being hit by pitch — but Tahlequah returned the favor to keep the game scoreless.

Defensive efforts took hold in the second inning to keep the game without a run, but the Tigers broke things open in the top of the third inning. Using a pair of singles to start the side, Tahlequah's hitting soon became contagious on the way to a seven-run lead.

The Tigers added another run in the top of the fourth inning, extending the score to an 8-0 lead.

The Buffs battled to the end, but Tahlequah added in three more runs in the top of the fifth inning and held off McAlester in the bottom frame to seal away the win.

Phillips led the Buffs at the plate, going 1-2 on the day with a single. Caden Lesnau and Shumway combined for three strikeouts on the mound.

Next up, the Buffaloes are scheduled to face the Tigers Tuesday in Tahlequah before returning home for the Mike Deak Shootout Festival Thursday through Saturday.
