Brynlee Sabers' hat trick advances Marlin girls to state semifinals

Mar. 1—WATERTOWN, S.D. — Throughout the Mitchell Marlin girls hockey season, opposing teams have had trouble keeping Brynlee Sabers in check on the ice.

It was more of the same on Friday morning, as the girls varsity state tournament kicked off with the third-seeded Marlins taking down No. 6 Rushmore 5-2 in their first-round contest, as Sabers recorded her fifth hat trick of the season.

Following 11 minutes of scoreless hockey in the first period, Sabers put the Marlins on the board first off the assist from Analeigh Hotchkiss. She found the back of the net again two minutes later, taking a pass from LiVaya Mimmack and scoring on the power play. Following Paige Zimiga scoring for Rushmore, Sabers instantly completed the hat trick with under two minutes remaining in the first.

In the second period, Resse Amick took advantage of another Marlins power play, scoring off a Sabers assist. She later scored her second goal of the game in the third period unassisted with five minutes left.

Despite being outshot 24-21, the Marlins went 2-for-2 on the advantage, while the Thunder were 0-for-2.

Mitchell advances to the semifinals, where the Marlins will face off against Aberdeen in the first semifinal game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at the Prairie Lakes Ice Arena in Watertown.
