Bryce Harper donned his new No. 3 with the Philadelphia Phillies for the first time over the weekend.

It turns out he’ll be joined by a lot more people in that venture.

ESPN reports that Harper’s Phillies jersey is now the all-time highest-selling new fan jersey in its first 48 hours of sales, citing figures provided by online retailer Fanatics.

Harper outsells King James

That means it sold more jerseys in the last two days than LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers jersey did last summer.

It’s an impressive sales achievement, especially considering the reported decline of the popularity of baseball.

Harper’s value beyond the diamond

It speaks to the value that Harper provides the Phillies beyond his skills as a baseball player. Harper isn’t the game’s best player, but he is arguably the game’s biggest star and most recognizable player.

That his jersey outsold that of American sports’ biggest star when he switched to the purple and gold of the Lakers is remarkable.

Also remarkable is where Harper’s jersey made the biggest sales impact. It’s not surprising that Philadelphia was the biggest sales market for the No. 3. But Washington, D.C. sold the second-most Harper Phillies jerseys over the weekend.

No only are some fans apparently not feeling spurned by his departure from D.C., several are apparently following him to Philadelphia with their sports allegiances.
