Bryce Harper had already won the hearts of Philadelphians everywhere when he signed a 13-year, $330 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. But he’s already going the extra mile to make sure Phillies fans love him forever.
Harper went on Philly sports talk station WIP on Tuesday, and it didn’t take long for New Jersey native (and die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan) Mike Trout to come up. Trout and his impending free agency are going to be talked about in Philadelphia for the next two years, but Harper wanted fans to know that they’re not the only ones who want Trout on the Phillies. He’s right there with them, and he wants to make it happen.
Bryce Harper: "If you don't think I'm gonna call Mike Trout to come to Philly in 2020, you're crazy." 👏👏👏— SPORTSRADIO 94WIP (@SportsRadioWIP) March 5, 2019
If the city of Philadelphia was a person, it would have squealed with excitement and then fainted dead away after hearing those words.
At his intro media conference, Harper said that he wants to recruit players to come to the Phillies. There is no quicker way into the hearts of many Phillies fans than to say “I’m going to call Mike Trout and convince him to sign with the Phillies.”
Even with Harper taking the lead on recruitment, there’s a lot more to it than that, and Harper knows it. A single phone call from anyone probably wouldn’t have spurred him to make his free agent decision any sooner than he was ready to. And the Phillies have to be willing to make Trout, almost certainly a future Hall of Famer, a competitive contract offer.
But all that is still 20 months away. That’s when Trout will hit free agency — if he even makes it that far. He could agree to a new contract with the Los Angeles Angels before then. But if he doesn’t, Harper will be ready to recruit Trout. If he’s smart, he’ll call the Eagles for help.
