The Boston Bruins suffered their first loss of the season in a painful way Saturday afternoon.

The New Jersey Devils scored the game-winner with just 1.7 seconds remaining in overtime, closing a back-to-back set at Prudential Center to begin the 2020-21 NHL season. The B's beat the Devils 3-2 in a shootout in Thursday's opener.

The Bruins are still searching for an even-strength goal through the first six periods of the season. Boston scored two power-play tallies Thursday, and its only goal Saturday was a shorthanded goal by Patrice Bergeron.

Bruins goaltender Jaroslav Halak made 29 saves on 31 shots in his first appearance of the season. Devils netminder Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced to earn his first win of the campaign.

The Devils struck first when Miles Wood deflected a shot past Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak late in the first period. It was Wood's second goal in as many games.

The Bruins equalized in the second period when Patrice Bergeron scored his 18th career shorthanded goal. 

Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak kept his team in the game during the third period with a couple clutch saves.

Devils forward Yegor Sharangovich's first career NHL goal was the difference in overtime.
