Bruins Racing to the Top

Michael Finewax looks at the Boston Bruins who are the hottest team in the league. That and news and notes from around the NHL in The Week Ahead

I watched the Opening Ceremonies from PyeongChang this morning and couldn’t help but feel the NHL should be on a break this week and competing in South Korea. I understand the NHL’s point of view but the need to showcase hockey at the world’s stage should have been the overriding reason to go to the Olympics.

There is plenty of information and good chatter always on the Rotoworld Hockey Podcast. Listen here.

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 12-18

4 Games – Arizona, Carolina, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Edmonton, Florida, New Jersey, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Toronto

3 Games – Anaheim, Buffalo, Calgary, Colorado, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Montreal, Nashville, New York Islanders, Ottawa, Philadelphia, San Jose, Vancouver, Vegas, Washington, Winnipeg

2 Games - Boston, Dallas, St. Louis

Florida plays all four games on the road.

Anaheim, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Montreal, New Jersey, the New York Rangers and Washington play three games on the road.

Arizona, Carolina, Columbus, Minnesota, Nashville, Pittsburgh, San Jose, Vegas and Winnipeg play three games at home.

INJURIES

Patric Hornqvist is week-to-week with a lower body injury. (Click here to see the rest of the injury list.)

Note: A tired team is one that has played the day or night before and is going against a team that did not play the previous day or night. The reverse is true for a rested team.

ANAHEIM

Games this week

@ Detroit, @ Chicago, @ Minnesota

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Ducks are back on the road for all three this week. Cam Fowler has been hot of late with eight assists in his last seven games. Rickard Rakell has been piling up the points this season and has 22 goals and 45 points in 50 games, including four goals and nine points in his last five games. Corey Perry has been in a season-long funk (actually it goes back to the start of last season) but he has six points in his last three games. John Gibson has been skating and working out but has yet to return to game action as he has been out with a lower body injury since January 30. Ryan Miller has been the starter of late. Nicolas Kerdiles was recalled by the Ducks.

ARIZONA

Games this week

vs. Chicago, @ San Jose, vs. Montreal, vs. Edmonton

Rested Team: vs. Montreal (Thursday)

Tired Team: @ San Jose (Tuesday)

Notes

The Coyotes play four games this week including three games in four nights. Antti Raanta should see the crease in three games with Scott Wedgewood getting the call once. Raanta is not having a bad season with the Coyotes despite his 9-14-5 record as he has a 2.63 GAA and a .915 save percentage. Perhaps the Coyotes have their goalie for the next few seasons. The New York Post was reporting that Max Domi was being actively shopped around the league in trade talk but GM John Chayka denied it. It would be surprising if the Coyotes gave up this early on the 22-year-old former first round pick.  Clayton Keller scored the overtime winner Thursday. It was his first goal in 13 games.

BOSTON

Games this week

vs. Calgary, @ Vancouver

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Bruins are the hottest team in the NHL and are just three points in arrears of the Tampa Bay Lightning with a couple of games in hand. They have the best tandem in goal with Tuukka Rask and Anton Khudobin who have combined for a 33-11-8 record with a .925 save percentage and have allowed 113 goals in 52 games. Brad Marchand completed his five game suspension and returned to the first line Wednesday, alongside Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak. Pastrnak has a ten game points streak on the go while Bergeron has eight goals and 13 points in the same 10 contests. Zdeno Chara has three points in his last three games and continues to be a fine mentor for the youngsters on the blueline including Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Carlo.

BUFFALO

Games this week

vs. Tampa Bay, @ Ottawa, vs. Los Angeles

Rested Team: vs. Tampa Bay (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Sabres have not had good production out of Sam Reinhart this season with only 26 points in 54 games but he has been turning it around of late with four goals and 13 points in his last 10 games including five points in his last two contests. Jake McCabe is out three-four weeks after undergoing thumb surgery. Johan Larsson returned on Thursday after missing a couple of games due to a suspension. Jack Eichel has four points in his last two games and had 53 in 54 games. Evander Kane keeps popping up as the best player to get at the trade deadline and it certainly looks like he will not be a Sabre come February 27.

CALGARY

Games this week

@ Boston, @ Nashville, vs. Florida

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Flames finish a long six game road trip before returning to play the Panthers. David Rittich continues to give the Flames excellent back up goaltending as he is 5-1-2 with a 2.20 GAA and a .927 save percentage after a 3-2 win over the Devils Thursday. Sean Monahan had a pair of goals Thursday and has 27 in 53 games thus far. After scoring only once last season in 37 games, you would have figured that Curtis Lazar would have no trouble beating that mark this season. Well, the winger is. Lazar, who was a healthy scratch on Thursday, has not scored in 39 games this season and has just one assist in his last 18 games. T.J. Brodie has six assists in his last four games.

CAROLINA

Games this week

vs. Los Angeles, @ New Jersey, vs. New York Islanders, vs. New Jersey

Rested Team: vs. New Jersey (Sunday)

Tired Team:  None

Notes

The Hurricanes play four games this week including three in four nights. Cam Ward is likely to see action in three games with Scott Darling picking up one game in goal. The Hurricanes play the Devils twice this week so look for Justin Williams to become involved if there is any extra-curricular activity. Jeff Skinner has only four goals in his last 27 games and that has to be concerning to the Hurricanes and his fantasy owners. Marcus Kruger was put on waivers by Carolina Thursday as was Josh Jooris. Elias Lindholm leads the Hurricanes in power play goals with six. It has been a frustrating offensive season for Justin Faulk as the defenseman has only four goals in 54 games after averaging 16 over the last three seasons. Sebastian Aho has 19 goals and 40 points this season in 50 games. He leads Carolina in goals.

 CHICAGO

Games this week

@ Arizona, @ Vegas, vs. Anaheim, vs. Washington

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Vegas (Tuesday)

Notes

The Blackhawks play four games with three coming in four nights. Corey Crawford (vertigo) is still not ready to return so look for Anton Forsberg and Jeff Glass to share the netminding duties. Crawford has been skating but was off the ice for a couple of days this week. It was not a setback according to the Blackhawks but rather part of their plan. Jonathan Toews broke an 11 game goalless drought on Thursday with his 15th of the season.  Brandon Saad has become a bottom-six forward as he was on the fourth line Tuesday before moving up to the third unit with Nick Schmaltz and Vinnie Hinostroza on Thursday. He is also off both units of the power play after starting on the first unit for most of the season.

COLORADO

Games this week

vs. Montreal, @ Winnipeg, vs. Edmonton

Rested Team: vs. Edmonton (Sunday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Mikko Rantanen missed his first game of the season Tuesday with a lower body injury but was back in the lineup on Thursday. The talented sophomore has 17 goals and 50 points in 52 games but misses his center Nathan MacKinnon who has missed the last four games with an upper body injury. He has started to skate and could return as early as this week or he could still be out another 14 days as he was slated to miss two-four weeks. Jonathan Bernier had a poor game on Thursday giving up three goals on 20 shots in only 25 minutes of action so this could be the chance the previously injured Semyon Varlamov needs to regain his spot as the number one goalie. Varlamov did not help his cause as he gave up three goals on 11 shots the remainder of the way.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

@ New York Islanders, @ Toronto, vs. Philadelphia, vs. Pittsburgh

Rested Team: vs. Pittsburgh (Sunday)

Tired Team: @ Toronto (Wednesday)

Notes

The Blue Jackets play four games this week including three in four nights. Sergei Bobrovsky will likely play three times while the recently recalled Jeff Zatkoff should play once. Joonas Korpisalo is usually the backup but he was sent to the minors to get in some game action and it would not be a surprise if he was recalled before Zatkoff is slated to play and gets the start instead. Ryan Murray (back) has not played since November 27 but partook in practice Thursday for the first time. There is no timetable for his return. Cam Atkinson saw his four game points streak end on Tuesday. Look for a strong finish from Atkinson who had 35 goals and 62 points last season.

DALLAS

Games this week

vs. St. Louis, @ San Jose

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Stars only play twice this week so don’t be alarmed if you have Kari Lehtonen and Ben Bishop gets both starts. Tyler Seguin has 28 goals in 55 games including six in his last six games. Mattias Janmark has been one of the better stories this season. He has 15 goals and 29 points in 55 games (the exact same stats as in 2015-16 but in 73 contests) but missed all of last season with a joint disorder called osteochondritis dissecans. Well done Mattias! Marc Methot has been practicing with the Stars and should be ready to return from a knee injury that has had him miss half the season. John Klingberg was the first defenseman to get to 50 points this season.

DETROIT

Games this week

vs. Anaheim, @ Tampa Bay, @ Nashville, vs. Toronto

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Red Wings play three contests in four nights as part of their four game week. Petr Mrazek and Jimmy Howard should split the net this week. Howard has lost his last five games while Mrazek has really come on of late and could be considered the starting netminder if he continues to shine. Gustav Nyquist has only one goal in his last 11 games. Tomas Tatar has been in an awful slump with only two goals in his last 20 games. He leads the Red Wings with seven power play goals. Anthony Mantha leads Detroit with 16 goals. Henrik Zetterberg has only six goals this season but does have 28 helpers.

EDMONTON

Games this week

vs. Florida, @ Vegas, @ Arizona, @ Colorado

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Colorado (Sunday)

Notes

The Oilers are in action four times including three in four nights. Cam Talbot should play three games, while Al Montoya will get the call once. Cam Talbot was a top-seven fantasy goalie last season but that has not been the case in 2017-18 as he is 19-18-2 with a 3.10 GAA and a .902 save percentage. That is worthy of the bench or on the waiver wire. Connor McDavid has seven goals and nine points in his last three games including a four goal, five point performance Monday against top-ranked Tampa Bay. The Oilers look to be out of the playoff race with less than two months to go so expect them to be sellers at the trade deadline with Patrick Maroon the leading candidate to be sent elsewhere.

FLORIDA

Games this week

@ Edmonton, @ Vancouver, @ Calgary, @ Winnipeg

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Winnipeg (Sunday)

Notes

The Panthers play all four games in Western Canada this week. Harri Sateri has been red-hot of late as he was the NHL’s second star of the week with a 3-0 record and should share the net with the healthy James Reimer. Roberto Luongo practiced with the Panthers Thursday for the first time since he was injured on December 4 and if he is able to return this week, Sateri will be sent to the minors. Stay tuned. Aaron Ekblad scored his 10th of the season Saturday and has reached double digits in goals in each of his first four seasons. Aleksander Barkov has four points in his last three games after being held pointless in his previous four tilts. His 47 points this season trails teammate Jonathan Huberdeau by four.

LOS ANGELES

Games this week

@ Carolina, @ Pittsburgh, @ Buffalo

Rested Team:  None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Marian Gaborik has been a healthy scratch in each of his last two games. He really doesn’t have much fantasy value as he continually gets hurt but he has not been scratched before so he may be nearing the end of his career as the Kings may buy out the remainder of his contract. Drew Doughty has nine points in his last seven games. Darcy Kuemper has actually outplayed Jonathan Quick, especially of late. Kuemper is 9-1-3 this season with a 1.78 GAA and a .942 save percentage which are superior numbers. Quick got off to a hot start this season but has faltered of late, giving up 10 goals in 85 minutes on 55 shots. He is 20-18-2 with a 2.51 GAA and a .919 save percentage. Those are nice numbers but he is 1-4 in his last five starts.

MINNESOTA

Games this week

vs. New York Rangers, vs. Washington, vs. Anaheim

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Jonas Brodin underwent hand surgery Wednesday and is out three-four weeks. Mikko Koivu has had 58 and 56 point seasons in his last two years but will really have to bump up his numbers this season to even come close as he has 28 points in 54 games. Mikael Granlund has 16 points in his last 15 games to give him 43 in 49 games. With Jaromir Jagr now in Europe, Matt Cullen is the oldest player in the NHL at age 41. Nino Niederreiter has a goal in four games since returning from a lower body injury that cost him eight games. Devan Dubnyk had a three game winning streak end on Thursday. He is 21-10-4 with a 2.68 GAA and a .916 save percentage.

MONTREAL

Games this week

@ Colorado, @ Arizona, @ Vegas

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Arizona (Thursday)

Notes

The Canadiens play all three games in the Southwestern United States and have all three in four nights. Carey Price should play twice with the surprisingly good of late Antti Niemi playing once. Price came into the season as a top-three fantasy goalkeeper in the estimation of most but he has been closer to a bottom-three netminder as he is 15-20-4 with a 2.95 GAA and a .906 save percentage. The Habs are going to be sellers at the trade deadline and although Tomas Plekanec wants to finish his career in Montreal, chances are he will be dealt. Jeff Petry had three power play goals on the weekend. Artturi Lehkonen has five goals in 38 games but three in his last two contests.

 NASHVILLE

 Games this week

vs. St. Louis, vs. Calgary, vs. Detroit

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

P.K. Subban has been hot of late with 14 points in his last 13 games. He leads all NHL defensemen with 15 goals and his 43 points and 44 penalty minutes make him one of the top fantasy defensemen in the NHL, if not the top. Roman Josi has given up his top spot on the blueline to Subban but his nine goals and 31 points in 50 games makes him still a top-15 fantasy blueliner. Filip Forsberg will return to action on February 10 after missing three games with a suspension. Viktor Arvidsson has five goals and eight points in his last eight games to give him 18 goals and 35 points with a plus-11 rating in 51 contests. Calle Jarnkrok leads the Predators with a plus-16 rating.

NEW JERSEY

Games this week

@ Philadelphia, vs. Carolina, @ Tampa Bay, @ Carolina

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Carolina (Sunday)

Notes

The Devils play four games this week including three times in four nights as part of a four game week. Cory Schneider is still out of action with a groin injury and if he is unable to go then Keith Kinkaid will play three games with Eddie Lack getting one start. It’s more likely that Schneider will be ready to go at some point if not at the beginning of the week so look for a split in net between Schneider and Kinkaid. They also play the Hurricanes twice this week so look for Miles Wood to add to his penalty minute count if there is any rough stuff.  Marcus Johansson has yet to return to the ice following his concussion on January 23. Nico Hischier has a goal and two assists in his last nine games.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Games this week

vs. Columbus, vs. New York Rangers, @ Carolina

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Islanders play three games in four nights. Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss will likely play once each with the hot goalie (if there is such a thing with the Islanders) playing the third contest. The Islanders continue to pile up goals but can’t win as they cannot keep the puck out of their own net. GM Garth Snow stated that he will not trade UFA-to-be John Tavares at the deadline. The Islanders are still within range of a playoff spot as they are even with Columbus for the second wild card at 58 points but the Blue Jackets do have two games in hand. Scott Mayfield is out at least four weeks with a lower body injury.  Anders Lee broke a seven game goalless streak Thursday with a goal against the Sabres.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Games this week

@ Minnesota, @ New York Islanders, @ Ottawa, vs. Philadelphia

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Rangers play four games this week and there is some concern with the play of Henrik Lundqvist who has been pulled in his three of his last five games. Ondrej Pavelec has been seeing a lot more playing time than it was thought of late and that cannot help the Rangers chances of making the post-season.  The Rangers are going to be sellers at the trade deadline as Rick Nash has been asked to give the 13 teams he will agree to go to and Michael Grabner is also ready to be dealt. The asking price on Nash seems high as New York wants a first, a prospect and a player or another pick. That’s a lot to ask for from 33-year-old who has only 15 goals and 25 points in 53 games this season. Ryan McDonagh’s name is also being bandied about.

OTTAWA

Games this week

@ Pittsburgh, vs. Buffalo, vs. New York Rangers

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

Alex Burrows got 10 games for kneeing and punching Taylor Hall in the head and I think he got off light. It’s the NHL and not the UFC and I don’t understand why the league never makes a statement with a severe penalty. Derick Brassard has missed the last two games with an undisclosed injury while Mark Stone missed his ninth straight with a lower body injury but should be back this week. The Senators are also sellers and Mike Hoffman could be one of the best pieces to be dealt as he has 15 goals and 37 points this season after three straight seasons between 26 and 29 goals. He has goals in three straight games.  Congratulations to Colin White who scored his first of his NHL career on Tuesday.

PHILADELPHIA

Games this week

vs. New Jersey, @ Columbus, @ New York Rangers

Rested Team: @ New York Rangers (Sunday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

If he is still available in your league, grab Travis Konecny as he has seven goals and 11 points in his last 10 games. He is a new player since he was placed on a line with Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux. He should be picked up in all pools at this time. Jakub Voracek has not lost much, if any, value as he is on a seven game scoring streak with three goals and 10 points. The winger has 11 goals and 63 points in 54 games this season and leads the second line alongside Nolan Patrick and Wayne Simmonds. Brian Elliott returned to action this week from a lower body injury and has given up four goals on 56 shots in winning both games.

PITTSBURGH

Games this week

vs. Ottawa, vs. Los Angeles, vs. Toronto, @ Columbus

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ Columbus (Sunday)

Notes

The Penguins play three games in four nights as part of a four game week. Look for Matt Murray to get the call three times with Tristan Jarry playing once. The Penguins are hurting a bit as Patric Hornqvist and Tom Kuhnhackl were both placed on injured reserve Thursday. Conor Sheary participated in practice on Thursday as missed the last three games with a lower body injury. Evgeni Malkin was the first star of the week with six goals and eight points in three games. Phil Kessel is on a six game points streak with three goals and 11 points to give him 24 goals and 65 points in 55 games. Riley Sheahan has been centering the third line with Kessel and Jake Guentzel as his wingers.

ST. LOUIS

Games this week

@ Nashville, @ Dallas

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: None

Notes

The Blues are on the road for both games this week. Carter Hutton had a bad game on Tuesday when he was pulled after a period, giving up three goals on only eight shots. But he was back between the pipes on Thursday and stopped 23-of-24 shots in the 6-1 win over Colorado. He is 15-5-1 with a 1.70 GAA and a .944 save percentage as he continues to relegate Jake Allen to the bench. Vladimir Tarasenko is in a slump with only one assist in his last six games. Alexander Steen has five goals and 10 points in his last 10 games. Joel Edmundson is out with a broken forearm suffered on Thursday. The defenseman had six goals in his first 21 games of the season but nothing in his last 35 contests. He had surgery Friday and is likely out until April at the earliest.

SAN JOSE

Games this week

vs. Arizona, vs. Vancouver, vs. Dallas

Rested Team: vs. Arizona (Tuesday), vs. Vancouver (Thursday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Joe Pavelski scored twice on Thursday but that only gave him 12 goals this season in 54 games. He had 145 goals in his previous four season (that’s an average of 36-plus goals per season) so he has been a huge disappointment this season. Tim Heed had 56 points in 55 AHL games last season so there was some hype entering this season but after a nice start at the beginning of the season, the wheels fell off and he was sent to the minors Thursday after not playing in almost four weeks and garnering 11 points in 27 games. Timo Meier scored his 13th of the season on Thursday and has 11 goals since December 1. He is worth looking at in keeper leagues. Martin Jones has won only one of his last six games and is 15-14-5 with a 2.64 GAA and a .912 save percentage.

TAMPA BAY

Games this week

@ Toronto, @ Buffalo, vs. Detroit, vs. New Jersey

Rested team: None

Tired Team: @ Buffalo (Tuesday)

Notes

The Lightning play four games this week including three in four nights. Andrei Vasilevskiy will get the call three times with Louis Domingue starting once.  Vasilevskiy is 32-10-2 this season with a 2.27 GAA and a .929 save percentage. Adam Erne was recalled from the minors Thursday and scored on his first shot for the Lightning later that night. Nikita Kucherov also scored Thursday and it was his first goal in 12 games. Yanni Gourde is up to 20 goals and has been part of a nice third line with Alex Killorn and Matthew Peca. He has six goals and 10 points in his last eight games giving him 40 points in 54 games this season with a plus-24 rating. Vladislav Namestnikov had an assist Thursday halting a four game pointless streak.

TORONTO

Games this week

vs. Tampa Bay, vs. Columbus, @ Pittsburgh, @ Detroit

Rested team:  None

Tired Team: @ Detroit (Sunday)

Notes

The Maple Leafs play four games this week including three in four nights. Frederik Andersen will play three games with Curtis McElhinney getting his usual start on the weekend when Toronto plays on back-to-back nights. Andersen was especially strong on Wednesday as he stopped 44 shots in a 3-2 shootout win over Nashville. Josh Leivo has apparently asked to be dealt as he wants to play and that is not happening in Toronto. Nazem Kadri had his six-game points streak end on Wednesday. He had three goals and eight points in the streak. Jake Gardiner has 13 assists in his last 10 games. Auston Matthews has 43 points in 47 games and has to be considered for the Lady Byng Trophy as he has only four minutes in penalties.

VANCOUVER

Games this week

vs. Florida, @ San Jose, vs. Boston

Rested Team: None

Tired Team: @ San Jose (Thursday)

Notes

The Canucks play three games in four nights so Anders Nilsson will get a start with Jacob Markstrom getting a pair. It was not a good night on Thursday for Nilsson who gave up five goals on 36 shots to Tampa Bay. Brock Boeser has 26 goals and 47 points in 51 games and should be considered a front-runner for the Calder. Sam Gagner is day-to-day with a sprained ankle. The Canucks will be sellers at the deadline and while it may be hard to trade the Sedin twins, Thomas Vanek will likely be moved. Henrik Sedin played in his 1,300th NHL game on February 3. Alexander Edler leads all Vancouver defensemen with 20 points. Sven Baertschi has seven of his 12 goals this season on the power play.

VEGAS

Games this week

vs. Chicago, vs. Edmonton, vs. Montreal

Rested Team: vs. Chicago (Tuesday)

Tired Team: None

Notes

Jonathan Marchessault has back-to-back games with a goal and an assist and is up to 54 points including 20 goals this season. He has made a believer out of me as I was wary as to what he could do after last season’s 30 goal campaign with Florida. Reilly Smith was the third star of the week with four goals and five points in four games. The Golden Knights acquired Zachary Leslie from the Kings for future considerations.   Colin Miller has been a pleasant surprise this season and leads all Vegas blueliners with seven goals and 30 points. As well, he leads the Golden Knights in power play time on ice. Marc-Andre Fleury has given up 11 goals in his last 101 shots on net in three games.

WASHINGTON

Games this week

@ Winnipeg, @ Minnesota, @ Chicago

Rested team: None

Notes

Andre Burakovsky has a goal and two assists in his last five games but was projected to be a healthy scratch on Friday. Nicklas Backstrom potted his 200th goal of his career on Tuesday. He is not having a typical Backstrom campaign as he has 12 goals and 41 points in 52 games.  If he was having his normal season for him, he would have an extra 10-12 assists. Jakub Vrana has one assist in his last 15 games. John Carlson has eight goals and 41 points in 53 games while Alex Ovechkin has 32 goals with 26 assists in 53 games. His 32 goals lead the NHL, two ahead of fellow Russian Evgeni Malkin. It has been a tough season for Braden Holtby who is 27-10-2 but his peripherals are not so great as he has a 2.76 GAA and a .915 save percentage.

Notes

The Jets are expected to get Mark Scheifele back on February 9 as he has missed 16 games with an upper body injury. The return will mean that Blake Wheeler will move back to the wing from center and that should help his goal total as he has not found the back of the net in 12 games. With Patrik Laine on the other wing, it will be one of the top lines in the NHL. Scheifele’s return will hurt the cause of Jack Roslovic who had three goals in his last five games on the top line. Goaltender Michael Hutchinson is out with a concussion so the Jets will go to Eric Comrie (the fourth goalie on their depth chart) to back up starter Connor Hellebuyck. Dustin Byfuglien has three goals and eight points since returning 14 games ago from a lower body injury that cost him 10 games.
