The Orioles, who have been making unconventional hires in rebuilding their organization, which rose from last place to first in the AL East in 2023, tabbed Mercado to manage their Class A affiliate at Aberdeen, where he was 147-120 in two seasons. Mercado led the IronBirds to the South Atlantic League championship and won the organization’s Cal Ripken Sr. award for achievement in player development in 2022.

With the Bowie Baysox in the Eastern League, Mercado will get to come home April 9; his new team will be the opponent for the Yard Goats’ first homestand, April 9-14 at Dunkin’ Park.

Bowie opens its season on April 5.
