Being a bridesmaid can be pretty costly. With everything from luxe wedding destinations to a super expensive hen party, you’re looking at a few hundred pounds minimum.

But you’d be shocked if your soon-to-be-married friend asked you to pay for her wedding dress.

Well, that’s exactly what one Australian bridesmaid was asked to do by her friend.

Writing about her strange experience on Mamamia, the bridesmaid – called Hayley – said she was “overjoyed” at being asked to join her friend Caroline’s bridal party.

However, her feelings of excitement soon grew to “utter despair” after her friend turned into bridezilla.

The bride-to-be began to obsess over every little detail from buttonholes for the groomsmen to table decorations.

She event went so far as to ask her friend to make an Excel spreadsheet of potential wedding cake makers.

When bridesmaid Hayley didn’t manage to get the spreadsheet sent over to Caroline on the same day (because she has a full-time job), the bride replied: “Thanks for this, would’ve been really helpful to have it yesterday when specified, but I appreciate it.”

Outraged that her friend hadn’t appreciated the fact she had cancelled her Saturday morning plans to research cakes, Hayley was even more shocked when Caroline asked her bridesmaids to go dress shopping three weekends in a row.

The bride eventually settled on a set of £400 bridesmaid dresses but opted for a mega-expensive one for herself. Costing $10,500 (around £7,615), the gown was double the amount her budget allowed.

Instead of finding a cheaper alternative, Caroline asked her bridesmaids to “pitch in” for her “dream dress.”

“That night, my inbox pinged again with another of the group emails from Caroline that I’d started to dread,” Hayley wrote. “The subject line was ‘Bridesmaid dress contribution’ and it made me break out into a cold sweat.”

“The latest bridal update was a long email outlining how she and Jase (Caroline’s fiancé) were hugely over the bridal budget now that she’d splurged on the dress. That it was ‘totally fine if you can’t’ but she would really love if we could ‘pitch in’ around $150 (£89) each towards her ‘dream dress’.”

Although three of the seven bridesmaids have so far agreed to the financial contribution, Hayley is rightfully annoyed by the whole idea.

“I’m starting to think I may have to bail on this wedding – and friendship,” she finished.

Commenters urged Hayley to “get out of the friendship” with others writing about similar bridezilla experiences.
