Brian Flores says Dolphins still going through “process” in OC search

Brian Flores and his Miami Dolphins coaching staff have just put a bow on their first practice as a staff in Mobile ahead of the 2021 Reese’s Senior Bowl. And yet there’s still plenty of attention to be paid to the elephant in the room: the Dolphins don’t actually have a complete staff on hand for the event. That’s because Miami, despite making several additions to the offensive coaching staff this past week or so, have not settled on an offensive coordinator to take the mantle from Chan Gailey. But Flores, who met and spoke with the media after his first practice closed, remained confident in both the team’s process to identify the right person for the job and the people in place already to make sure this week is successful.

The Dolphins are “still going through their process” in evaluating coordinators, according to Flores.

“We have very capable guys with Eric (Studesville) and George (Godsey),” said Flores.

And indeed, both Studesville and Godsey are in consideration for the coordinator role as things currently stand. And Godsey, to his credit, is a former offensive coordinator with the Houston Texans — although it has been a while since he’s had to wear that hat.

Miami doesn’t seem to be in any hurry or rush to make a decision, however. Instead, they’ll forge forward this week and potentially look to gather some clarity between their internal candidates along the way. That would be a most unorthodox approach, using the Senior Bowl to not just evaluate the prospects, but also potentially get a simulation of what each potential in-house coordinator candidate would do from a practice and structure standpoint, too. Given how elaborate the Dolphins have been elsewhere under the direction of Brian Flores, we wouldn’t put anything past them.

But for now we can only assume that the team is going to operate the same as they ask their players to during the season: day by day, one step at a time.
