Brentford 2-4 Newcastle: Magpies take seventh, wait on Europe

Newcastle United doubled up Brentford 4-2 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday, giving themselves a chance at returning to Europe by finishing seventh on the Premier League table.

The Magpies finished above Manchester United for the first time in the Premier League era, and will go to the Conference League if the Red Devils lose to Manchester City in the FA Cup Final. A Man United win would push the Magpies out of Europe

Newcastle finish with 60 points, three behind Chelsea and six back of fifth-place Spurs. Newcastle's plus-23 goal differential was well superior to Man United's minus-1, but the Magpies will be upset to finish eight points back of the top four.

Brentford will be grateful to regroup in the offseason as injuries, poor defending, and a long suspension to Ivan Toney conspired to have the Bees in a relegation scrap for much of the season. Thomas Frank's men finish 16th with 39 points.

Goalscorers: Barnes (21'), Murphy (37'), Isak (38'), Janelt (49'), Wissa (70'), Guimaraes (77')

Bruno Guimaraes goal! Brentford 2-4 Newcastle (77th minute)

It's a goal and two assists for Bruno Guimaraes, and it's fitting he could be sealing their European place given his mainstay status as the club's star this season amongst so many injuries.

Lewis Hall initially looks to have won a penalty, but VAR says the foul was on the edge of the box.

No problem for the Brazilian, who sizzles a free kick from 18.01 yards past Mark Flekken.

Yoane Wissa goal! Brentford 2-3 Newcastle (70th minute)

Vitaly Janelt goal! Brentford 1-3 Newcastle (49th minute)

Bees aren't done buzzing for the season, as Mathias Jensen finds Yoane Wissa and the latter slots across for a deserved goal by Vitaly Janelt. He's been good this season.

Halftime — Brentford 0-3 Newcastle

The Bees buzzed out of the gates, then Newcastle turned into a buzz saw.

An opportunistic buzzsaw.

Brentford errors have helped the Magpies insure their European hopes, as fotmob credits the Magpies with five big chances over 45 minutes.

Two huge errors, two more NUFC goals — Murphy, Isak score to make it Brentford 0-3 Newcastle (37th, 38th minutes)

First Alexander Isak presses a sloppy Brentford back line touch before a wonderful pass to find Murphy for a back post finish.

Then Murphy leaps on a bad touch on the other side of the Bees' third a minute later, feeding Guimaraes who picks up his second assist while setting up Isak.

Newcastle look likely to finish seventh.

Harvey Barnes goal! Brentford 0-1 Newcastle (21st minute)

A sensational ball from Bruno Guimaraes from the right top edge of the 18 to the left side of the six, where Harvey Barnes heads home for what could be a huge goal for the Magpies.

Brentford’s pretty goal undone by Nick Pope; Newcastle miss at other end

He's back and he's spectacular.

A great leg save from Newcastle keeper Nick Pope on Ivan Toney.

To the other end where Alexander Isak sets up Joelinton, who misses wide!

Brentford’s pretty goal undone by VAR

Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney are both in sizzling form but the latter won't get another goal against his former side.

A long VAR review has found offside in the build-up. Still scoreless after *checks watch* three minutes.
