Sep. 5—MITCHELL — As the September schedule ramps up, several of the top volleyball teams in the state are out to fast starts and have solidified places in their respective top fives.
This week's poll featured just two total newcomers, down from five a week ago, while the top three positions of all three classes remained unchanged from last week.
Here's what to know about this week's polls:
Class AA and Class B both had turnover at the fifth position this week, with Huron and Colman-Egan, respectively, slotting into the rankings.
For Huron, it's the first inclusion of the season so far, as the Tigers have started 6-0 to surge from one total vote at the bottom of the receiving votes list last week to a No. 5 ranking. From last week's poll, Huron surpassed Aberdeen Central, Sioux Falls Lincoln, O'Gorman, Pierre and Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
Colman-Egan, meanwhile, was the preseason No. 5 in Class B before trading places with Castlewood last week. This week, the two programs flip-flop once again, with the Hawks back in the rankings and the Warriors just on the outside.
After introducing two new teams to the top five last week, Class A rankings went unchanged this week. Further, outside of the top five, only three teams — Platte-Geddes, Elkton-Lake Benton, Mobridge-Pollock — received one vote each, the fewest total votes given to teams that fell outside the rankings across all three classes.
Sioux Falls Christian is back to having unanimous control of No. 1 after No. 4 Dell Rapids breifly interrupted that status with one top vote last week. Slotting in behind the Chargers are, in order, Dakota Valley, Wagner, Dell Rapids and Madison, as the top five in Class A owns a combined 26-3 record.
