Braves All-Star 2B Ozzie Albies breaks foot vs. Nationals

Atlanta Braves All-Star second baseman Ozzie Albies left Monday's game against the Washington Nationals with a left foot injury.

The Braves announced later in the game that he sustained a foot fracture.

Albies suffered the injury during a fifth-inning at-bat. He planted his left foot after making contact and immediately fell to the ground. He left the game and hopped on one foot in the Braves dugout before leaving to have the injury evaluated.

The Braves didn't offer an initial prognosis or timeline for his return.

Albies, 25, is slashing .246/.288/.408 with eight home runs, 33 RBI and three stolen bases through 61 games this season. He's coming off his second career All-Star campaign that saw him slash .259/.310/.488 with 30 home runs, 106 RBI and 20 stolen bases for the World Series champion Braves in 2021. His effort also earned him his second career Silver Slugger award.

The injury's a tough blow for a Braves team that entered Monday's game on an 11-game winning streak to improve to 34-27 and pull within 5.5 games of the NL East-leading New York Mets. They extended the streak to 12 with a 9-5 win.

Backup Orlando Arcia took Albies' place in the lineup. Arcia, 27, is a career .244 hitter with 45 home runs across 2,008 plate appearances in seven MLB seasons.
