If you love reading and word games like Wordle, then you might be interested to learn the meaning of the obscure term “proprietary eponym”. Sometimes, a product becomes so popular that its brand name becomes a stand-in for that entire type of product, like Band-Aids, Coke or Kleenex. Those are all common examples of proprietary eponyms. It’s a process called genericization, and it’s happening right now in the e-reader space.

Amazon didn’t invent the e-reader or create “electronic paper” (an honor that actually goes to Sony). However, Amazon’s popular Kindle line is quickly becoming synonymous with e-readers in general, and we have a feeling the company doesn’t mind. Sure, there are plenty of awesome tablets for sale in 2022, and the reMarkable Tablet is pretty dang cool, but for most bookworms, it’s all about the Kindle.
And in September 2021, Amazon finally updated the Kindle Paperwhite. We named the updated e-reader one of the year’s best Christmas gifts and coolest tech gadgets, but if you haven’t upgraded your own Kindle, then this is the right time.
As of Friday, February 11, Amazon has dropped prices on the all-new Kindle Paperwhite. A new 21% discount takes $30 off the regular retail price of $139.99, and for a limited time, you can order your own Paperwhite for just $109.99. That’s the price of the ad-supported Kindle, but the ad-free version is also on sale. With a $30 discount, the ad-free Kindle Paperwhite, the one we recommend, is now $129.99.

What’s New With the Kindle Paperwhite
We first wrote about the new Kindle Paperwhite in September 2021, when Amazon announced that the e-reader would be getting a long-overdue update ahead of the holiday shopping season.
Like the previous model, the Paperwhite is still water-resistant and great for reading in all light conditions. So what changed?
The all-new Kindle Paperwhite has a few new features:
A bigger 6.8″ screen
300 PPI glare-free display
Faster page-turning
USB-C charging
Reversible display
The Kindle Paperwhite is the goldilocks of Amazon’s e-readers. It has a better resolution and larger display than the standard Kindle, but a much better price tag than the Kindle Oasis, which has a larger adjustable screen and more customization options.
