Boys swimming and diving: Willmar, Montevideo swimmers aim for Saturday finals

Feb. 22—HUTCHINSON — The Willmar and Montevideo boys swimming and diving teams have three relays and a bevy of individuals who have advanced into the Section 3A finals after strong showings in the preliminaries Thursday.

Of the three relay teams, Montevideo and Willmar's best finishes came in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Thunder Hawks' quartet of Mickey Hess, Jacob Ochsendorf, Talen Brock and Gavin Arends swam to a second-place finish in 1 minute, 33.83 seconds. Willmar's four-man squad of Jacob Loerzel, Alex Marcus, Ryan O'Meara and David Lammers clocked in at 1:35.10 for a third-place finish.

Those individually qualifying for Willmar in the section finals: David Lammers (200 individual medley), Jacob Loerzel (100 breaststroke), Soren Newberg (200 freestyle), Brendan Pappenfus (1-meter diving) and Evan Wallestad (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke).

As for Montevideo, the Thunder Hawks had four individuals advance to the section finals: Gavin Arends (50 freestyle, 1-meter diving), Nolan Christopher (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Austin Dunn (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Mickey Hess (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle).

Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield also qualified all three of its relay teams into the finals. Each of them took fifth in the preliminary swims.

The section finals take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hutchinson Middle School.
